Vic´s The city and the wilderness-Day 2 An expedition to San Juan Island area

Vic´s The city and the wilderness

Good morning, time to get up, wash up and get dressed.
This day started very early in the morning. So I swallowed the breakfast in a whole and threw my gear in the car. Jenn got up early too to see me off at the door and wish a farewell. I left the Compass Rose (thanks again Marshall and Jenn for the kind hospitality) and Coupeville and drove to Anacortes to catch the ferry to Friday Harbor. The morning drive was great, the fog was slowly lifting away and the sun shone brighter and brighter. I was not the only one enjoying the fresh morning, during the drive I saw deer at the shoulder of the road and one actually did cross the road so you have to be carefull in the morning hours.
Eventually I arrived at Anacortes and parked the car in a public parking lot. It is advised not to bring a car to Friday Harbour since it could be a challenge to find parking over there. Being a little slow on deciding what to bring and what to leave in the car I wasted some time and had to haste to the ferry dragging my gear behind me. The ferry was rather empty so I dumped my stuff and enjoyed the beautiful hour ride to Friday Harbour.
Arrived at Friday Harbour I walked up to the meeting place where 2 people were already waiting. Beth and her husband (I am trying very hard to remember his name, but I suck at names) both are from Oregon and are outdoor experienced. We were all excited about what was going to await us and not very long after, our guides Matt and Trey drove up with the van to pick us up.
On the island we drove to our launch site Smallpox Bay and we offloaded the kajaks to the shore. There was sure a lot of gear to carry around for 3 days and I was trying to figure out how we were going to carry all that stuff in just 3 boats.
Matt having undertaken trips like this several times was a load master and found for every single item a proper place to stow. Pretty amazing how our gear disappeared inside the small kajaks and soon we were ready to hit the water. Beth teaming up with her husband, Matt paddling solo and Trey shared a boat with me.

What shall I say about the paddling around the San Juan Island? It was just breath taking. I have never enjoyed nature that much as I did on this trip. In fact I was so enjoying all this that I did not take much footage with the camera. Powering our boat ahead of the others we had time to just lean back and enjoy the nature. Trey knew a bit about the wild life in the region and told me a little about what we could encounter on our floating class.
We paddled up the Haro Strait dividing US and Canadian waters, passed by Henry Island and waited for the currents to slow down to cross the channel over to Spieden Island. Matt is an excelent guide and judged very carefull what route to take in order to avoid critical situations. Not only experienced in packing kajaks but also good in reading currents and water movement.
With short stops to stretch legs and a lunch break, we continued to paddle around to reach our camp site on Stuart Island, always keeping an eye on distant waters trying to spot an orca.
Unfortunately we haven´t had any luck and at the evening we arrived at the camp site and secured the kajaks ashore.

Time to set up the camp. We found a suitable location for our group and claimed the spot for us. Now it was time to get the gear out of the kajaks and set up tents and our mobile kitchen :D
Matt and Trey produced an absolutely tasty dinner even though our kitchen was not really professionally equipped. That was pretty cool, I enjoyed the great food, the fresh air, the wonderful surroundings and of course the company of nice people.
Having had an adequate time of rest and with a filled stomach we all went out for an evening hike on Stuart Island.
The island is very tranquil. The only access to the island is either by boat or by airplane. Inhabited by 900 residents, Stuart Island has however only 150 permanent residents staying on the island year round. The hike took us through a forrest, along a landing strip, to the only school for kids on the entire Island and to the Stuart Island Treasure Chest. Being the only school around, the amount of students are rather scarce as well.
The Stuart Island Treasure Chest is actually a gift shop. However it is not a common store like at any other place. The family who produces the gifts (t-shirts, sweaters ect) put all the goods inside a wooden chest. Anybody who wishes to obtain a gift simply walks up to the chest, opens it up and takes away whatever is desired. Inside the packages are envelopes to be found in which you put in the amount of money asked for the picked gift and mail it back to the family. An honorary system. I really liked this and I had never seen such thing anywhere before.
At the end of our hike we arrived at a hill from where we could watch an amazing sunset of the longest day of the year. It was very beautiful.

Hope you enjoyed.
