NFPA Handbook dedications typically recognize individuals or groups who have made a unique
contribution or have a lifetime of distinguished service to a mission. The career of David M.
Wallis exemplifies both of these criteria. A member of the NFPA 70E committee since 1998,
David has played a key role in NFPA 70E evolving from a document comprised primarily of
installation requirements extracted from the NEC® to where it is today — the authoritative
leader on safe electrical work practices to protect employees against shock, arc-flash, and
other hazards associated with the use of electricity. David's unique sense of how to distill
extremely technical concepts into workplace safety requirements that can easily be implemented
by employees at the grass roots is valued and respected by his colleagues and peers.
David's career with OSHA is distinguished by contributions toward making workplaces safer.
As he moves out of civil service into retirement, he can do so knowing that through his efforts
at OSHA and as a member of the Technical Committee on Electrical Safety in the Workplace
countless workplace accidents resulting in worker fatalities and disabling injuries have
