@ Wallaby Ranch Flight Park in Davenport, FL. After 9 Tandem instructional flights with stellar pilot Steve Prepost, I'm given the green light by Malcolm Jones (Owner and Tandem Flight Instructor) to Aerotow(AT) Solo from the Landing Zone (LZ) behind the tug/tow plane in more challenging and rough thermal air conditions.
The decision is made by Malcolm to have me continue to be towed by Paul, since he is the pilot that has pulled me up in all of my solo flights so far. Fay is also an excellent tug pilot. Malcolm has not been flying in the last several weeks b/c he's just had surgery to remove a bone spur in his left shoulder. This is why you see him holding his left arm statically in the same position. It will take a month or so of rehab for him to be ready to fly again...and he can't wait to get back in the air!
I've opted to wear my GoPro on the helmet so you can hear me narrate my flight, observations and decision making process as well as experience the flight from my perspective. Our helmets are much lighter than what you might wear for motorcycle riding and for good reason. The extra weight of the camera causes more strain on your neck and upper back when flying prone and keeping the head up. I recommend flying with the camera on the town tube or behind you on the keel.
This is my 8th solo AT flight and the very first time I'm permitted to fly with the big boys...in the turbulent afternoon thermal updraft conditions. Until this point I've been flying only in the early morning or pre-sunset smooth, calm, light breeze conditions. The "glass offs" at sunset were full of beautiful views and the last big realize of warm, buoyant air from the whole LZ field. Floating around for an extended flight was by far my
Perfecting control of the glider, staying out of the tow plane's turbulant rotor wash and staying with the tow plane requires a lot of practice, focus, confidence and assertiveness. Flying the glider after release is even more fun but still requires quality training and supervision from the experts. This is my 75th flight in the course of my first year of flying since February of 2011. So at the end of this flight, I've had 53 mountain launches and landings plus 14 instructional tandem AT take offs, flights and landings, and another 8 solo ATs. I'm not counting my first Discovery Tandem Flight in the Swiss Alps in 1997. ;D
The pro pilots flying that afternoon confirm that the core of the thermals, aka, "the sweet spot" for climbing up in the sky, have very narrow cores. The core is rising hot air from the field and outside of the core is where cold air is droping down from the top of the thermal column. Developing clouds are often found at the top of the thermal where the rising hot air cools and condenses, forming the cloud. We do not fly inside clouds for safety and visability reasons. When you see birds circling, they are also "thermalling", allowing their bodies to defy the inevitable sink/glide back down to earth.
Experienced pilots have a Variometer which records the flight path via GPS and gives instant data on air speed, ground speed, rate of ascent and descent as well as a variable beeping sound to alert you when you're in a thermal and rising.
In this first thermalling experience I fly "pure" w/o a Vario, relying on my senses of sight, touch and sound to find the thermals. Other pilots and birds are also great indicators of where the action is to climb to cloud base. Very satisfied with my first thermalling efforts and extended flight. I'll be getting a Variometer soon. Enjoy!
BTW, If you want to try a tandem hanggliding flight or get trained to aerotow hangglide, then Wallaby Ranch is the place! Its on a beautiful private 500 acre preserve, roughly 30 minutes from Tampa and Orlando, FL.
Malcolm has the most flights of any pilot in the world by far, hands down. Wallaby Ranch has an impeccable, unblemished safety record (which is unheard of in this sport) thanks to Malcolm's techniques, expertise, decision making and sharp focus with attention to conditions, equipment and the students' skill and comprehension levels.
The Ranch is staffed by a stellar team of instructors, ground/air crew, management and top notch chef. The atmosphere is relaxed, fun, welcoming (if you act right and respectfully of others), comfortable and safe. Meals and camping, RVing or lodging is available at affordable rates. Keep your ears open for music by the staff and/or by special guests visiting the Ranch.
Wallaby emulates a community feeling rather than a flight park business focused on getting you in and out and selling stuff. They have all the equipment you'll ever need to buy or rent, however, Wallaby is not about all about the money...its about flying, having fun and socializing with and learning from an amazing group of pilots and friends from around the country and the world.
Have Fun, Be Safe and Free! If you want to fly, then go Wallaby, says me. :D
